John Newell retired from the partnership in March 2015. 

Mr. Newell handled some of the largest domestic and global M&A transactions in the last few years. He represented strategic buyers in the acquisition of public and private targets, as well as private equity firms, target companies and special committees. His transactions included both friendly and hostile acquisitions. He also advised public companies on shareholder activism, corporate governance and takeover defense.

Mr. Newell counseled clients in a broad range of businesses and industries including information technology, real estate and telecommunications. His clients included BRE Properties, Inc., Oracle Corporation, Knowledge Universe, STT Telecommunications, Inc., The St. Joe Company and LM Ericsson.

Mr. Newell was cited as a strongly recommended attorney in M&A by The Legal 500 (2010). He was also a recommended expert in M&A and Emerging Companies matters by IFLR 1000 (2010). San Francisco Magazine named him among its Northern California Super Lawyers and Bay Area Lawyer Magazine named him one of the “Best Lawyers” in the Bay Area.
