PROFILE

Kalana Kariyawasam is an associate in the New York office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Litigation & Trial Department.

Kalana represents clients in all aspects of commercial litigation from inception through trial and appeal.  He has handled a wide variety of civil matters — including securities, antitrust, contract, and intellectual property disputes — in federal and state courts throughout the United States.

Kalana maintains a vibrant pro bono practice, in which he represents individuals and organizations in matters related to mass incarceration, LGBTQ+ rights, and domestic violence.

Kalana graduated from Harvard Law School, cum laude, where he served as an executive editor for the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender.

EXPERIENCE

Kalana’s experience includes representing:

  • Oatly in putative class actions brought by investors alleging violations of the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934
  • Illumina in the second vertical merger trial to take place in the United States since 1977*
  • Morgan Stanley in an antitrust action relating to the automation of the stock loan market*
  • Pacific Gas & Electric Company in litigation arising from wildfires in 2017 and 2018 and, subsequently, the biggest utility bankruptcy in United States history*
  • Incarcerated individuals who were sentenced as juveniles to indeterminate life sentences with the possibility of parole in a lawsuit seeking to reform the parole process in New York*
