Latham’s Excellence in D.C. and Beyond Recognized by National Law Journal Awards

Latham & Watkins has been recognized for legal excellence across practice areas, receiving honors in nine categories from the National Law Journal (NLJ) Legal Awards, the most of any law firm. The awards recognize outstanding achievements, innovation, and dedication within the Washington, D.C. legal community and nationally.

Corporate partner Julia Thompson was named a D.C. Rising Star based on her work advising public companies in a range of vital areas, including securities, governance, and compliance matters.

In addition to the above pre-announced win, three partners are finalists in their respective categories, including:

• Appellate Attorney of the Year — Roman Martinez, for the Washington, D.C. partner’s work securing the landmark US Supreme Court decision in Relentless v. Department of Commerce (decided with Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo), overturning the decades-old Chevron deference doctrine.
• Winning Litigators — Tony Sammi and Rachel Blitzer, for the New York partner duo’s significant trial win for Universal Alloy Corporation in a multi-hundred-million-dollar aerospace trade secrets dispute.

Latham is also a finalist in the following firm categories:

• D.C. Law Firm of the Year, recognizing overall top performance across the full spectrum of categories.
• Appellate Hot List, for handling exemplary appellate matters, such as the historic US Supreme Court decision overturning Chevron deference, a holding of administrative law that will be felt across virtually every federal agency.
• D.C. Litigation Department of the Year — Antitrust, highlighting Latham’s top performance across the antitrust spectrum, which includes a precedent-setting win for Cendyn, defeating “hub and spoke” conspiracy allegations tied to algorithmic pricing recommendations, with wide impact in a hot area of law at the intersection of antitrust and AI.
• D.C. Litigation Department of the Year — Intellectual Property, for achieving fantastic results for clients in their most complex disputes, including winning a critical patent infringement victory for leading semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries, defeating a US$430 million dollar patent claim just a month before trial. Latham has now been recognized in the D.C. IP Litigation Department of the Year award category eight of the last nine times the category has been included.
• D.C. Litigation Department of the Year — White Collar, for handling 25% of the DOJ’s publicly disclosed FCPA enforcement actions against corporations in 2023, including receiving a rare declination from the DOJ for Lifecore Biomedical and securing a deferred prosecution agreement with the DOJ for Tysers Insurance Brokers Limited.
• D.C. Diversity Initiative of the Year, for the firm’s pro bono work to preserve the legacy of Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley, resulting in the newly designated Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in Sumner and Glendora, Mississippi, and Chicago, Illinois.
