Latham Named a Finalist for Six Financial Times Innovation Awards

October 15, 2024
The Financial Times
The firm continues to garner recognitions for cutting-edge client work and leadership in the legal industry.

Latham & Watkins has been named a finalist in six categories of the 2024 Financial Times Innovative Lawyers North America awards, including the overall award for Most Innovative Law Firm in North America, which the firm won last year — a cumulative honor based on scores earned across the FT’s nomination categories and related research into the operational policies and practices of law firms.

Two individual Latham partners have been shortlisted:

  • Andy Gass in the Innovative Practitioner category. A Bay Area litigation partner and Global Co-Chair of the firm’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force, Gass is an acclaimed antitrust and IP lawyer who represents technology companies in their highest-stakes disputes — acting as both a courtroom litigator and a behind-the-scenes strategist on issues such as generative AI and digital copyright law.
  • Joshua Tinkelman in the Innovation in Using Data category. A New York finance partner and former Global Co-Chair of the Private Equity Finance Practice, Tinkelman has developed a sophisticated database that consolidates and shares banking and private equity finance deal terms firmwide, significantly enhancing institutional knowledge and client service.

Additionally, three Latham teams have been recognized as finalists:

  • A Supreme Court & Appellate Practice team, led by partner Roman Martinez, in the Innovative Lawyers in Dispute Resolution category for securing the landmark US Supreme Court decision for our client Relentless Inc. overruling the Chevron doctrine, which had required courts to defer to Executive Branch agencies when resolving the meaning of ambiguous statutes.
  • A Capital Markets Practice team, led by partners Sarah Axtell, Rick Kline, and Anthony Richmond, in the Innovative Lawyers in the Technology Sector category for their work advising Reddit in its landmark US$748 million initial public offering in March 2024. The IPO involved multiple novel legal issues to achieve its goals, including introducing a new revenue stream that involves licensing data to major AI players and infusing a community-focused approach to deal structure and marketing activities.
  • The firm’s Innovation Attorneys team in the Innovation in Generative AI Strategy category. This dedicated team of Latham lawyers integrates technologies and AI across all facets of Latham’s client service delivery, driving transformation from the cutting edge to ensure the firm continues to implement best-in-class technologies that are practical and user-friendly.
