Latham Named "Intellectual Property Group of the Year"

Citing the firm’s trial wins in high-profile patent cases and its strengths across IP litigation capabilities, Law360 has named the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice of Latham & Watkins as “IP Group of the Year.”  

“Equipped with a stable of veteran IP trial attorneys, Latham & Watkins certainly flexed its patent litigation muscles over the past year,” Law360 reported, citing as examples the firm’s victory for Interdigital Communications Inc. in a wireless patent case and its successful defense of Capital One Financial Corp. in a bellwether suit against a patent holding company, Intellectual Ventures.  

Matthew Moore, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice Group, noted “that a major part of Latham’s success is its high number of excellent attorneys with first-chair trial experience who are involved with their cases on a day-to-day basis.”  

Many of Latham’s IP attorneys come from engineering or scientific backgrounds, giving them a solid understanding of technical issues often involved in patent cases. “We marry the incredible technical ability with the storytelling ability that, I think, very few firms could approach,” said Doug Lumish, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice Group.  

Law360 also recognized Latham’s “nonstop” rate of success at the U.S. International Trade Commission, highlighted the firm as a “a heavy-hitter in the generic drug litigation realm” and noted “its brisk pace before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, where it has a more than 96 percent rate of getting petitions granted.”
