Latham Wins Intellectual Property Litigation Department of the Year Honor in Washington, D.C.

Latham has once again been named the top law firm in Washington, D.C., for intellectual property litigation by the National Law Journal (NLJ) in its 2017 “D.C. Litigation Departments of Year” special report. Latham’s IP Litigation Practice won this honor in 2015 as well, the last time this award program was conducted.

The report, which takes the pulse of litigation departments in top law firms in our nation’s capital and recognizes firms with distinguished practices, states that Latham’s IP Practice received “the nod for shutting down high-risk actions against high-profile defendants in 2016.” 

Citing major victories the team achieved for NVIDIA and Emirates NBD Bank PJSC, the NLJ highlights the group’s trial prowess. The NLJ quotes Latham's IP Litigation co-chair Matthew Moore who says that clients can litigate confidently “because we'll try the case and deliver the results." Partner and former White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler was part of the team that delivered the win for Emirates Bank, and Moore noted that trying big cases is nothing new for Ruemmler, who got convictions of two Enron executives in 2006. 

The NLJ also recognizes the practice for “stamping out patent suits by two well-financed nonpracticing entities, winning a $2 million fee award for Jaguar Land Rover North America and making new appellate law on attorney disqualification for Schlumberger Ltd.” 

The NLJ notes that partners Max Grant and Matthew Moore set a plan in motion several years ago to grow the practice, in part through recruiting top-shelf trial attorneys across the country, several of which were involved in achieving the aforementioned client victories. "Max and I say this to each other every day: 'The plan has worked perfectly,'" Moore says in the article. The practice is a well-integrated, trial-ready and tested team that can handle the most complex disputes, no matter where the case is taking place.
