San Diego Partner Named Healthcare Trailblazer
Former Global Co-Chair of Latham’s Healthcare & Life Sciences Practice, Katherine Lauer, has been named a Healthcare Trailblazer by The National Law Journal (NLJ) in a report featuring top lawyers in the healthcare space who are “movers and shakers in the legal industry” and who have made an impact through “new types of strategies or innovative court cases.”
In her published profile, the NLJ specifically recognized Lauer for her work on behalf of Columbia/HCA starting in the late 1990’s, when 300 hospitals were subject to a six year system-wide healthcare fraud investigation, the largest ever at the time. Said Lauer, “It was a challenge to find a way to settle an investigation that alleged violation of the Stark and Anti-kickback laws with respect to hundreds of hospitals and thousands of physician agreements. I worked with [the Department of Justice] to develop ways to resolve these cases without litigating them on an arrangement by arrangement basis.”
Lauer focuses her practice on healthcare litigation, with emphasis on healthcare fraud defense. She has defended some of the country's largest and most high-profile civil and criminal government healthcare fraud investigations and qui tam cases. She also has extensive experience in the federal Anti-kickback Statute, the Stark Laws, and the federal False Claims Act, as well as reimbursement and other healthcare regulatory compliance issues.
