New York Litigation & Trial Chair Named a “Rainmaker”

Miles Ruthberg, Chair of New York’s Litigation &Trial Department, was named a “rainmaker” by Law360 for successfully representing many major companies in bet-the-company litigation, including securities law, class actions and complex commercial disputes.

In a Q&A with Law360, Ruthberg highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding and knowledge of a clients’ business. From outside perspectives to internal business motivations and culture, he reveals that this knowledge is key to becoming a “rainmaker,” noting, “Understanding the client’s business has always been my top priority as a lawyer — and I think it has been the most significant factor in advancing my career over almost 40 years.” In addition, Ruthberg credits his success to being flexible and adaptable. He highlights an example in his own career, the transition he made in 2006 when he began to expand to New York from Los Angeles. Ruthberg states, “You have to always stay attuned to new opportunities, and be ready to act.”

Ruthberg has achieved highly favorable results in trial, on motion, in settlement and on appeal. In recent years, he has won complete defense victories at trial on claims totaling more than US$3 billion; obtained dismissal of numerous multi-billion dollar securities class actions; and successfully renegotiated the then largest class action settlement in mass tort history.
