Litigation & Trial Partner Named Healthcare Trailblazer

The National Law Journal (NLJ) has recognized Global Chair of the Healthcare Services & Providers Industry Group and Washington, D.C. partner, Daniel Meron, in its inaugural Healthcare Trailblazers report, which features lawyers in the healthcare space who are “movers and shakers in the legal industry” and who have made an impact through “new types of strategies or innovative court cases.”

Notably, the NLJ recognized his ground-breaking work in Willette v. UMass Medical School, in which Meron, representing UMass Medical School, obtained the first appellate decision nationwide to hold that a state-university medical school was to be treated as an “arm of the state” exempt from the False Claims Act. He was also recognized for his significant win in UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. v. Azar, which held that the manner in which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) determined whether insurance companies in the Medicare Advantage program were overpaid was unlawful. The victory was described as “a shocker of a decision,” and the result of “some incredible lawyering.”

Meron has deep regulatory, investigatory, and litigation experience across a broad range of healthcare and life sciences matters, from product approval, exclusivity determinations, and promotional regulation by the US Food and Drug Administration to coverage and reimbursement regulation by CMS, including fraud and abuse and white collar enforcement investigations and litigation. He focuses his practice on providing sophisticated counseling and advocacy (regulatory, investigative and litigation) to members of the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries.
