Alvaro López Usatorre is an associate in the Brussels office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm’s Global Antitrust & Competition Practice.

Alvaro advises multinational companies on EU competition law matters with a particular focus on merger control, State aid and regulatory issues. 

Prior to joining Latham, Alvaro worked at a leading boutique specialized in EU and Spanish competition law in Madrid. He has also worked as a trainee at the Directorate General for Competition at the European Commission, where he focused on antitrust issues in the media sector.

Alvaro contributes to some of the leading academic blogs and magazines in the field of competition law, such as Concurrences, Wolters Kluwer, and Global Competition Litigation Review.

Alvaro’s experience includes advising:

  • Aon on its contemplated US$80 billion acquisition of Willis Towers Watson
  • Cerner in its US$28.3 billion acquisition by Oracle, involving merger control and FDI reviews globally, resulting in an unconditional clearance
  • CVC on merger control aspects in relation to its complex investment into La Liga, the Spanish sports association which organizes and manages the two existing men’s professional football leagues in Spain 
  • Major energy and industrial companies on state aid and regulatory matters
  • One Rock Capital Partners in obtaining EU merger control clearance for its acquisition of Prefere Resins Group
  • A multinational bottling company in the negotiation of distribution and licensing agreements with a leading brand of alcoholic beverages
  • Multinational investment funds on merger control aspects in connection with their mergers and acquisitions activity
  • A leading media publishing company in a complaint against Google’s potential abusive behavior in connection with its search engine*
  • A public enforcer in assessing the anticompetitive nature of the licensing and distribution scheme of a leading sport and fashion company*
