Michael D. Levin, a founding partner of the Chicago office, retired from the Partnership in December 2007. He had practiced law since 1967 and joined the firm in 1982, after having been a partner at another Chicago law firm. Michael left Latham from 1996 to mid-1998 to serve as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Sears, Roebuck and Co.
His practice focused on corporate transactional work, with emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, asset securitization and general corporate counseling. He was a member of both the firm's Corporate Finance Practice Group (of which he was the founding Chair), and the Mergers and Acquisitions Practice Group.
Michael served Sears, Roebuck and Co. for many years, and regularly represented Sears and present and former subsidiaries of Sears in a variety of transactions. He has also represented Morgan Stanley (both before and after Sears ownership of Dean Witter) and has served General Electric Capital Corporation, Nissan Motors Ltd., Bank One, Hyatt Equities, Safeco Corporation, HCR Manorcare, Beverly Enterprises, Integra Life Sciences Group, Inc., CCC Information Systems Group, Inc., GTCR Golder Rauner, LLC, Majestic Star Casino, The Quaker Oats Company, Jefferies & Company, Inc., Credit Suisse First Boston, Goldman, Sachs & Co., Citicorp, Mindscape, Inc., Antares Capital Corporation, and The Asset Management Group, among others.
Michael is past chairman of the Securities Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association and a long-time member of the American Bar Association's Committee on Federal Regulation of Securities. An active member of his community, he has served as a member of the Ravinia Festival's Sustaining Fund, and a Governing Member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.
