Retired Partner

Robert A. Long retired from the partnership in December 2003. A member of the firm since 1971, Robert's practice focused on complex business litigation and trial practice, with a range of experience that included defense of professional liability cases against lawyers and accountants, the defense of securities law cases, federal procurement law matters for aerospace companies, general commercial disputes, partnership disputes, wrongful termination and other complex business litigation.  He carried significant experience in state and federal court trials and in arbitrations.  The following is a list of some of his matters:

  • Trial counsel for the law firm of Jones Day Reavis & Pogue in defense of securities fraud claims brought in American Continental Corporation/Lincoln Savings & Loan Securities Litigation, as well as defense of parallel professional liability claims brought by the Resolution Trust Corporation.
  • Trial counsel for Micron Technology, Inc. in defense of claims regarding management and control of Micron.
  • Trial counsel for the law firm of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro in defense of claims by an expelled partner.
  • Trial counsel for Trylon Corporation in arbitration of claims for breach of market development agreement against Pharmacia & Upjohn Company.
  • Counsel for the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in defense of professional liability claims arising out of the firm's representation of an heir to the estate of Frances Hammer in litigation against Armand Hammer and related entities.
  • Counsel for the law firms of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP, Morrison & Foerster LLP and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, LLP in various professional liability cases and partnership matters.
  • Counsel for the law firm of Lewis and Roca in defense of securities fraud and professional liability claims arising out of the firm's representation of Sun State Savings & Loan Association.
  • Representation of Hughes Aircraft Company in defense of federal grand jury investigations involving cost and pricing issues on federal procurements and on foreign payments issues.
  • Representation of Lockheed Corporation in the development and prosecution of claims against the prime contractor on the C-17 airlifter program.
  • Representation of Northrop Corporation in regard to environmental issues at its B-2 facility.
  • Trial and coordinating counsel for Cincinnati Milacron in defense of cases involving the development, sale, installation and operation of business computer systems.

In recognition of his trial experience and record, Robert was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.  He has also served on the Board of Governors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers of Los Angeles and belongs to the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He has frequently appeared as speaker and panelist for bar programs dealing with professional liability, procurement law and business litigation issues.

Robert served for five years as Managing Partner of the firm's Los Angeles office and has also been chair of its Professional Liability Practice Group.  In addition, he served on the boards of directors of World Impact, Inc. and the Crescenta-Canada Y.M.C.A., the boards of trustees of the San Francisco Theological Seminary and Town Hall Los Angeles, and the Board of Visitors of the Indiana University School of Law, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1971.
