Sonya Shaikh is an associate in the Orange County office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Litigation & Trial Department. Sonya advises clients on complex business litigation, with a focus on securities litigation, mergers and acquisitions, professional liability, and class action litigation.

Sonya represents both public and private companies and their officers, directors, and special committees in connection with a variety of litigation matters, including:

  • General commercial litigation
  • Securities class actions
  • Shareholder derivative litigation
  • Mergers and acquisitions litigation
  • Fraud allegations
  • Battles for corporate control
  • Other complex, high-exposure litigation

Sonya also maintains an active pro bono practice, advising clients on U-Visa matters, assisting with Special Immigration Juvenile Status petitions, and representing individuals under California’s Lemon Laws.

Sonya previously served on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and local leader to the Women’s Lawyers Group. She currently acts as local leader to the Parent’s Lawyers Group.

Sonya graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine School of Law. While in law school, Sonya served as the staff editor for the UC Irvine Law Review, as a teaching assistant in the Legal Research and Writing Program, and participated in UCI’s Appellate Litigation Clinic where she co-wrote a brief for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in a copyright infringement appeal case that was ultimately reversed in part and remanded. Sonya also served as a judicial extern to Judge Josephine L. Staton at the US District Court for the Central District of California.

Sonya's experience includes representing:

  • NextGen Healthcare – Secured a complete defense jury verdict in the first holder’s claim case to go to trial in the US in nearly 90 years (Orange Cty. Sup. Ct.); successfully resolved securities fraud class action (C.D. Cal.)
  • Dell Technologies – Represented the special committee of Dell Technologies in a class action arising out of Dell’s acquisition of its Class V stock. The parties settled the matter on the eve of trial for roughly one-tenth of the plaintiffs’ total possible damages (Del. Chancery)
  • Banc of California – Represented the company’s former CEO in securities class action (C.D. Cal.)
  • Representing the directors of a public company in Delaware state court litigation involving claims for breach of fiduciary duties
  • Representing technology companies and real estate investment trusts in securities class actions and stockholder litigation alleging breach of fiduciary duties in connection with mergers
  • Representing the former CEO of a national bank in Section 10(b) securities class action
  • Representing the Board of Directors of a breakthrough technological healthcare company in connection with a fast-paced proxy contest against an activist investment hedge fund
