Senior Analyst, Intellectual Property and Life Science

Dr. Stella North, an analyst in the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice, draws on more than 20 years of experience as a former research scientist to provide clients with comprehensive technical analysis and litigation support at every stage of representation in complex patent cases.

Stella delivers scientific and technical assistance on intellectual property matters involving the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and life sciences industries. She brings extensive knowledge and experience as a former research scientist working in the fields of biomedicine and biodefense, and as a named inventor on several patents. Stella handles a range of tasks related to intellectual property matters, which include consulting on scientific research, conducting and analyzing prior art searches, analyzing patent claims, assisting with inter partes review petitions, and helping subject matter expert witnesses prepare expert reports.

Stella has worked on behalf of pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and medical device companies, with a focus on IP matters involving:

  • Monoclonal antibodies
  • Fusion proteins
  • Peptide drug conjugates
  • Next-generation DNA sequencing
  • Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) technology
  • Stem cell technology

Prior to joining Latham, Stella served as a federal scientist at the Department of the Navy’s US Naval Research Laboratory. Her work focused on translating cutting-edge, bio-based discoveries into useful and robust biomaterials, sensors, and diagnostics for enhanced capabilities in the field. She has also previously performed scientific research at the Institute for Advanced Sciences Convergence, Georgetown University Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, and Duke University Medical Center.

Stella has authored more than 45 research publications, including peer-reviewed research articles in leading scientific journals, books chapters, study reports, and conference proceedings. She has also presented original research at national and international conferences, and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for the scientific journals Analytical Chemistry and PLOS ONE.
