Zijun Zhao is an associate in the New York office of Latham & Watkins.

Zijun represents financial institutions, corporations, and directors and officers across a variety of sectors—including financial services, cryptocurrency, and technology—in regulatory enforcement actions, internal investigations, as well as federal and state court proceedings.   

Zijun maintains an active pro bono practice, focusing on asylum, criminal and socio-economic justice. 

Zijun earned her JD from Duke University School of Law, where she served as articles editor of the Duke Law Journal and student attorney in the International Human Rights Clinic.

Zijun was previously a judicial extern for Judge Edward M. Chen of the US District Court for the Northern District of California and a summer associate in the New York Office.

Zijun’s white-collar defense and investigations work includes representing:

  • The founder of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange in criminal and civil enforcement matters before the DOJ, CFTC and SEC  
  • A leading blockchain security firm in an internal investigation concerning disputes with a leading cryptocurrency exchange and in response to OFAC subpoena, with no action pursued
  • A nonprofit humanitarian organization in response to civil investigative demand from the DOJ, with no action pursued
  • A prominent international game development company in response to an FTC investigation
  • An accounting advisor in response to voluntary request from the DOJ, with no action pursued

Zijun’s civil litigation experience includes representing:

  • The Joint Liquidators of Three Arrows Capital, Ltd, a prominent cryptocurrency hedge fund with billions of dollars in assets previously under management, in their BVI liquidation and chapter 15 case in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and related proceedings in chapter 11 cases of other cryptocurrency companies, including Genesis Global, BlockFi and FTX 
  • Robertshaw US Holding Corp., a global designer and manufacturer of component parts for appliances, and its US subsidiaries in their chapter 11 cases in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas in connection with its liability management transaction litigation 
  • Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, a branded and generic pharmaceutical manufacturer, in its chapter 11 cases in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware 
  • An investment and incubation firm and its co-founders in the adversary proceeding in FTX’s chapter 11 cases in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, obtaining favorable settlement 
  • The Special Committee of the Board of Directors of Sculptor Capital Management in its completed acquisition by Rithm Capital Corp

Litigators of the Week Runners-Up and Shout-Outs — Three Arrows Capital

A Latham team, led by partners Chris Harris and Adam Goldberg and counsel Tiffany Ikeda Austin, won a bench trial in Delaware Bankruptcy Court that will enable the joint liquidators of Three Arrows Capital to amend its claim in the FTX bankruptcy from US$120 million to US$1.5 billion.
