Truman Mak is an associate in the Hong Kong office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Litigation & Trial Department.

Truman represents clients in general commercial litigation and arbitration, and contentious financial regulatory matters, with experience in matters involving multijurisdictional disputes, economic tort, fraud, shareholder and fund investor disputes, trusts financial regulatory proceedings, administrative law and constitutional law. 

He has experience working with clients in various sectors, including financial services, investment funds, shipping, aviation, cryptocurrency platform, consumer products, telecommunications, and construction, as well as high-net-worth individuals. 

Truman is a Solicitor Advocate who has been granted higher rights of audience to appear in all levels of civil courts in Hong Kong.

  • A decentralized cryptocurrency exchange platform in recovering lost cryptocurrency from a digital asset theft against a cryptocurrency issuer
  • Hong Kong Airlines Limited in defending a claim by a Hong Kong based construction company for retention money allegedly held under a construction contract, as well as related interlocutory injunction proceedings
  • Hong Kong Airlines Limited in the restructuring of its US$6.2 billion debts and liabilities, including its guarantee of the US$683 million perpetual securities issued by Blue Skyview, as well as related disputes
  • A NY listed Chinese real estate developer in defending a claim by an investment fund to repurchase the real estate developer’s own notes that are in default
  • A major Hong Kong listed bank and syndicated loan agent in the enforcement of certain loans and securities involving multiple jurisdictions totaling nearly HK$5 billion
  • A Cayman investment fund in defending HKIAC arbitration proceedings involving investment disputes, as well as related injunction and Court proceedings 
  • High profile individuals in the shipping industry in defending Mareva Injunction of over US$180 million and associated civil litigation in Hong Kong involving allegations of fraud and conspiracy across multiple jurisdiction
  • UBS AG in relation to proceedings by the liquidators of China Metal Recycling (Holdings) Limited for its liabilities as a joint sponsor in an initial public offering*
  • BYD Company Limited in connection with a cross border dispute relating to disclosure of trade secrets and confidential information*
  • A satellite operator in defending an application to set aside an arbitral award on the ground of failure to comply with pre-arbitration escalation clauses, and subsequent appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Court of Final Appeal*
  • A major Korean financial institution in relation to recovery of investments funds of over US$30 million in a potential Ponzi scheme*
  • A distressed debt fund in connection with an urgent enforcement of securities for a US$100 million loan against a listed Chinese developer who triggered several events of default and cross defaults*
  • A high net worth individual in relation to a cross-border shareholder dispute of over US$100 million*
  • A NYSE listed company in a shareholder dispute arising from competing privatization attempts, including obtaining an injunction to prevent dealing in shares and conducting HKIAC arbitration proceedings*
  • A listed Chinese financial institution in connection with bankruptcy and winding up petitions following the enforcement of a pre-IPO debt and equity investment*
  • A global investment bank in defending a claim by its former customer relating to an alleged fraud committed by its former employee*
