Advising Nonprofits, NGOs, and Social Enterprises

In addition to offering pro bono counsel directly to underserved individuals, our lawyers advise nonprofits, social enterprises, and small businesses. This work includes drafting, reviewing, and negotiating lease and partnership agreements; taking on board governance matters; addressing and managing conflicts of interest; and advising on tax law, such as charity formation and ensuring compliance with tax-exempt status.

We pursue this work with the aim of enabling nonprofits to thrive and achieve the greatest impact in their communities. Below are some examples of the nonprofits and social enterprises we had the privilege of advising this year:

  • Animal Legal Defense Fund, a law advocacy organization that seeks to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals
  • BIGKID Foundation, a charity that equips young people at risk of social exclusion and violence in the UK to take control of their lives and act on their own potential
  • Black Minds Matter UK, a charity seeking to improve mental health in the Black community by connecting individuals and families with free mental health services by professional Black therapists
  • Black Trans Foundation C.I.C., a nonprofit working to promote and further the social advancement of Black trans and nonbinary people in the UK
  • Bus de la Solidarité, a mobile legal advice collaboration with the Paris Bar that visits impoverished areas, offering advice on such issues as access to housing, caregiving, and employment
  • Digital Divide Data, a nonprofit committed to using technology and digital skills to bridge the divide between economically and socially marginalized youth and employment opportunities
  • Disability Rights Texas, a legal protection and advocacy agency that works to ensure full and equal participation in society for Texans with disabilities
  • Fundación Porque Viven, a Spanish nonprofit that promotes and develops pediatric palliative care — ensuring that children and their families are offered people-centered and home-based care
  • Ghetto Film School, a nonprofit film school that seeks to educate, develop, and celebrate the next generation of storytellers
  • GlobalGiving, a nonprofit that strives to transform aid and philanthropy to accelerate community-led change by supporting local nonprofits in countries affected by war, disaster, and other hardship and connecting them to financial resources
  • The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit working to conserve lands and waters and to create a world where people and nature can thrive
  • The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit that develops and scales technologies to rid the world’s oceans of floating debris and trash
  • Options for Youth, a nonprofit that seeks to expand opportunities for adolescents and break cycles of poverty in underserved Chicago neighborhoods
  • Peek Vision, a UK-based social enterprise that works alongside eye health providers practicing in developing countries to optimize their services and health systems
  • Pickles Group, a nonprofit that helps kids whose parents or caregivers have cancer by creating child-led and -focused communities and providing resources
  • Règles Elémentaires, a French charity dedicated to fighting period poverty by collecting period products for individuals in need and to breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation
  • Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading race equality think tank, providing authoritative, evidence-based interventions to overcome racial inequality
  • Samir Kassir Foundation, a Beirut-based organization working to spread democratic culture in Lebanon and the Arab world
  • Think Equal, a UK-based nonprofit that teaches social and emotional intelligence to children with the goal of ending discrimination and cycles of violence
  • Ukraine Justice Alliance, a coalition of lawyers, investigators, and communications specialists supporting the Ukrainian government and its people in response to Russia’s invasion
  • UNJUST, a nonprofit that challenges discriminatory practices and policies in UK policing and the wider criminal justice system
